This story makes my head hurt. A webhost pulled down some websites that offered free music downloads. Nothing new there. Except the website was for a record label for which all their artists give their music away for free on the label’s website,. Those were the files the webhost wanted proof of copyright for. And the wanted the proof via snail mail (copies of the registration form). It doesn’t appear anyone claimed the music was infringing, the webhost was being <strike>idiotic</strike> proactive.

Further complicating the issue – the songs are licensed under creative commons so there’s no form and the cc copyright can’t be displayed since the site is down.

The article doesn’t say who the webhost is but the site is still down and points to a ad landing page with “IX Web Hosting” in the banner.

If these guys are your webhost or your considering using them you probably want to reconsider. There may be more to this story but from this it appears these guys take a guilty until proven innocent attitude even when logic and a lack of evidence otherwise says differently.
